About

South Carolina First Steps is looking for graduate students that are interested in a paid student internship or practicum experience during the 2024-2025 school year.

South Carolina First Steps is the state’s only dedicated, comprehensive early childhood initiative focused on getting children ready for school and life success. As both a state agency and a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, First Steps works with families, early educators, and partners statewide to support children from birth through age five.

We take a holistic approach to accomplishing our mission, offering services that improve children’s health, strengthen families, expand access to quality child care, increase participation in four-year-old kindergarten, and help transition rising kindergartners into school.

Evidence Review Project

There are 47 evidence-based or evidence-informed interventions approved by the First Steps State Board of Trustees available for local partnerships to implement based on their community’s needs and resources. These interventions comprise the program catalog that spans the program areas of parenting (26 programs), early care and education (12 programs), health (6 programs), and school transition (3 programs). Every so often, First Steps endeavors to revisit the research literature that support the evidence designations of these programs. The student will follow a rigorous process to review and document findings from peer-reviewed research and national clearinghouses for each program in the local partnership program catalog. In collaboration with First Steps staff, these reviews will be made publicly available and will be utilized to determine a recommendation of an evidence designation to the Board of Trustees for their consideration.

Responsibilities

Utilize First Steps provided template to document findings from peer-reviewed literature using databases; compile results from template into a synthesized literature review and conceptual model for each program using citation management software; collaborate with First Steps staff.

Time Commitment

Student can be involved for up to 25 hours per week. One semester or full year opportunities are available.

Application Process and Contact

Please email Lexi Jones, Evaluation Coordinator (ljones@scfirststeps.org; 803-451-1914), and include a copy of your CV/resume if you are interested in this position.
