Course Requirements

There are three paths to the Ed.D. with a concentration in Education Systems Improvement: you can have an Ed.S., a graduate certificate in Higher Education Leadership, or a master's degree. Each path has different course requirements, described below.

 

Please Note:
  • You should take your concentration courses with your cohort, as dissertation project information is introduced in these courses sequentially.

  • All hours listed below are the minimum required hours. Your advisor may suggest you take additional courses.

 

Post-Ed.S.: 39 hours

When you enter the program with an Ed.S. for Superintendency, your advisor will review your transcripts to determine the courses and credit hours you need to complete the Ed.D. program, but you will need to complete a minimum of 39 hours in the Ed.D.

Students entering with an Ed.S. will typically take:

  • 9 hours from the Core: Curriculum Studies (EDCS) and Educational Technology (EDET) courses as determined by program of study. 
  • 9 hours in the concentration: Educational Leadership (EDLP) courses as determined by program of study. 
  • 9 hours in research
  • 12 hours of dissertation preparation

All hours listed are the minimum required hours. Your advisor may suggest you take additional courses.

 

Post-Graduate Certificate: 45 hours

When you enter with a Graduate Certificate in Higher Education Leadership, your advisor will review your transcripts to determine the courses and credit hours you need to complete the Ed.D. program. You must complete a minimum of 45 hours in the Ed.D.

Students entering with a Graduate Certificate in Higher Education Leadership will typically take:

  • 12 hours from the Core: Curriculum Studies (EDCS) and Educational Technology (EDET) and Educational Leadership (EDLP) courses as determined by program of study. 
  • 9 hours in the concentration: Educational Leadership (EDLP) courses as determined by program of study. 
  • 12 hours in research
  • 12 hours of dissertation preparation.

All hours listed are the minimum required hours. Your advisor may suggest you take additional courses.

 

Post-Master's: 60 hours

When you enter the program with a master’s degree and no other credentials, you will need to complete a minimum of 60 hours in the Ed.D. Your advisor will review your transcripts to determine the courses and credit hours you need to complete the program. 
Students entering with a master’s degree typically take:

  • 12 hours in the Core: Curriculum Studies (EDCS) and Educational Technology (EDET) and Educational Leadership (EDLP) courses as determined by program of study. 
  • 15 hours in the concentration: Educational Leadership (EDLP) courses as determined by program of study. 
  • 9 hours in the cognate: Choose PK-12 or Higher Education focus. 
  • 12 hours in research
  • 12 hours of dissertation preparation
