Handling Student Records

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) of 1974 sets forth requirements about students' rights and privacy that instructors must follow when it comes to educational records.

Student Records Are Private

Instructors should not discuss any aspect of a students performance in their class with parents, spouses or employers. Doing so violates the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).

All faculty are required to read a FERPA tutorial and pass a quiz about FERPA.

Access to confidential student information is only granted on an educational need- to-know basis. Refer third parties to the Office of the University Registrar for more information. 

In addition to federal law, there is a state law that prohibits using any public information for commercial solicitation.
